The Legendary Stihl 028 Chainsaw

Let’s face it: most of us don’t need a chainsaw with a 70+ cc displacement and a 36” bar. What we do need is a reliable saw with enough power to take on tough jobs and stand the test of time. That’s the reason serious chainsaw users regard the Stihl 028 AV Super Wood Boss as one of the best saws ever made, and many chainsaw enthusiasts have one in their arsenal today.

Though Stihl released an updated (and now discontinued) Stihl MS280 for the 028, they were two different saws and many chainsaw users consider the 028 to be the superior model. Check out the specifications for the 028 and the more powerful 028 Super below.

Stihl 028 Specifications

Stihl 028 Super Specifications

  2. Bought a used 028 super in 1990, still cuts 10-12 cords of firewood every year while the MS280 sits in the garage

  3. Bought mine from a pawn shop, and it was beat then. Just kept bolting parts on and it won't die. Early model, when a chain brake was optional; older than my kids.

  5. I have an 028 wood boss that I would like to rebuild and upgrade to the largest head and piston size that can be used. Can you tell me anything about that?
Also have .029 farm boss and MS360 pro that I will probably do the same on.
Also, can the carb be replaced on an MS version to old style? Thanks

The reason I ask is because I'm looking for a cylinder head and gasket replacement for my still 028 AB super electronic quick stop chainsaw but I don't see no WB on any of the labels and my part number is 1118-029 23 06 and the closest part number I can I get is 1118-203 I believe. Does anyone know where I could get a cylinder head and gasket kit for my saw any help would be appreciated thank you

  8. I bought my 028 Farm Boss in 1988. After 33 years, it still cuts like a dream and starts on the first pull. Really!

  10. My first Stihl was an 028 Super given to me new by my late uncle in 1985. Very reliable saw. It was accidently run on raw gas a few years later and ruined. I recently purchase a nice used one in my uncles memory. If you can pick up a decent used one do it. Great saw for sure.
